Flunking Arne Duncan | Common Dreams
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan loves evaluation. He insists that everyone should willingly submit to public grading of the work they do. The Race to the Top program he created for the Obama Administration requires states to evaluate all teachers based in large part on the test scores of their students. When the Los Angeles Times released public rankings that the newspaper devised for thousands of teachers, Duncan applauded and asked, “What’s there to hide?” Given Duncan’s enthusiasm for grading educators, it seems high time to evaluate his own performance as Secretary of Education.

From Huff Post: Secretary of Education Arne Duncan appears to have no problem with an unelected education czar running Detroit school districts. Perhaps that might actually come up this year in civics.

"Can Detroit become the fastest-improving urban district in the country?" Duncan asked Detroiters packed into the auditorium of the Charles H. Wright Academy of Arts and Sciences. "I see no reason why that can't happen."
It was a challenge, and a less scathing message than the one Duncan gave during his last visit here, in 2009. Duncan admitted branding the city as "ground zero" for education reform, may have angered Detroiters.
"I was a little bit tough," he said. "Two years later, I couldn't be more hopeful and optimistic about Detroit."
Duncan's emphasis on turning around the Detroit district is echoed in the sentiment that pervades the schools here.
"If we can do it in Detroit, then we can do it anywhere in America," said Michael Brennan, president of United Way for Southeast Michigan.
Detroit's schools are depressed. The district is hundreds of millions of dollars in debt and faces a mounting enrollment crisis. This year's first day of school saw a 55 percent attendance rate.
A recovery in Detroit would be encouraging for school districts nationwide. But for that to happen, recent reform measures, such as the creation of a special state-run district to manage Michigan's lowest-performing schools, must bear fruit.

How badly did Arne Duncan want to talk to Matt Damon?
It turns out that people in the Obama administration made several attempts to reach actor Matt Damon just before he spoke at last month’s Save Our Schools rally in Washington D.C., blasting education policies that focus on high-stakes standardized tests.
According to two people familiar with the efforts, the administration tried to arrange a meeting with Damon and government officials, including Education Secretary Arne Duncan, before the July 30 march. The sources declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.
In fact, Duncan was willing to meet Damon at the airport when he flew into the Washington region and talk to him on the drive into the city, according to the sources. Damon declined all of the requests.

Language can be quite salty but there is Duncan busy selling out Chicago kids before he had a chance to sell out American kids. Perry should be lectured but Duncan is no position to lecture anyone.
Perry should be lectured about Texas' abysmal graduation but is this guy in a position to lecture anyone.
Who do you even root for when you have two people doing nothing for children complaining because the other guy is doing nothing for children

"Far too few of their high school graduates are actually prepared to go on to college," Duncan said on Bloomberg Television. "I feel very, very badly for the children there."
"You have seen massive increases in class size," Duncan also added. "You've seen cutbacks in funding. It doesn't serve the children well. It doesn't serve the state well. It doesn't serve the state's economy well. And ultimately it hurts the country."
