Elizabeth Warren Goes After Scott Brown On "Buffett Rule"

"Just last week, Scott Brown said in an interview that he thinks Mitt Romney and Warren Buffett should get special tax breaks that are not available to most Americans. I don't think that's fair," Warren said in a new post on Blue Mass Group, a New England independent political blog."

This is one of the places where Scott Brown and I see things differently," she said.

The "Buffett Rule," named after billionaire William Buffett, would require people who make more than $1 million to pay at least 30 percent in taxes. President Barack Obama highlighted the proposal in his State of the Union address and is likely to hammer away at it in the coming months. The issue will also take center stage this week in the Senate as Democrats prepare to unveil a bill that would turn the "Buffett Rule" into law.

"This isn't the first time Senator Brown has been more concerned with protecting millionaires than helping working families," Warren said, ticking off handful of jobs bills that were put forward by Obama but didn't advance in Congress. "Each bill would have been paid for with a small tax on people making more than $1 million a year. Senator Brown and every other Republican voted against those jobs."

Gingrich Wants Kids To Work As Janitors, But Refused To Work Himself AlterNet

Newt, who avoided Vietnam with student and marriage deferments, resisted taking a job. During his college years, Newt called up his father and stepmother to ask for financial help. His stepmother, Marcella McPherson, can still hear his exact words: “I do not want to go to work. I want all my time for my studies…Bob Gingrich told me he will not help me one bit. So I wondered, would you people help me?” Big Newt began sending him monthly checks.

Dolores Adamson, Gingrich’s district administrator from 1978 to 1983, remembers, “Jackie [Gingrich's first wife] put him all the way through school. All the way through the P.h.D…He didn’t work.” Adds Adamson, “Personal funds have never meant anything to him. He’s worse than a six-year-old trying to keep his bank balance…Jackie did that.”

Robert Kuttner: Eric Schneiderman: Hero or Goat?

The activation of the administration's long dormant task force on criminal misconduct in the financial collapse, with New York's progressive attorney general Eric Schneiderman as co-chair, could be the most fateful political and economic development of the election year. There are still immense pitfalls ahead, as Wall Street allies inside the administration and on Wall Street itself try to reduce Schneiderman's role to that of symbolic fig leaf.

But President Obama has done something potentially momentous for which he deserves our praise, even if he himself does not fully grasp the implications. The significance of the shift is still in play, of course, and will be made clearer as events unfold over the next several weeks.

The report from a task force examining how to compensate thousands of North Carolinians who were sterilized against their will under a state program was delivered to Gov. Bev Perdue on Friday. The governor has said she will review the report, which suggests $50,000 per living victim and mental health services, and will make her recommendations to the legislature. The program, which ran from 1929 to 1974, was intended to reduce welfare rolls by preventing mostly poor, uneducated and sometimes mentally handicapped people from bearing children. About 7,600 people were deemed unfit to reproduce. The task force estimates that as many as 2,000 of them are still alive.

A U.S. flag was burned by a group of protestors inside City Hall, according to City Council President Larry Reid. City officials also said three police officers and one protester were injured during Saturday's events.

Story updated 3:15 a.m. ET:

Sgt. Christopher Bolton of the Oakland Police Department told msnbc.com that the number arrested was likely between 200 and 300. "We are still processing the arrests," he said. He was speaking after the release of a statement on the Oakland City website that put the number of arrests at 200. "That figure is probably on the low side and we don't have a confirmed total yet," said. Sgt Bolton. In the statement, released in a PDF file format, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said: "Once again, a violent splinter group of the Occupy Movement is engaging in violent actions against Oakland. Single Payer 2 Votes Short in Senate - Capitol Desk - California Healthline

The idea of a single-payer health care system in California stalled on the Senate floor yesterday, falling two votes short of passage.

Reconsideration of the bill was granted, though, so proponents of SB 810 by Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) have until Tuesday to reintroduce the bill. First they will have to come up with two big votes. The bill failed on a 19-15 vote.

First Read - Romney revising disclosures for overseas accounts

Mitt Romney could face new questions about his overseas investments after a campaign official acknowledged to NBC News that his campaign is revising his federal ethics forms to report more than a half dozen offshore holdings, including income from a multi-million dollar Swiss bank account that was not disclosed last year.

The tax returns released by the Romney campaign this week showed that the Ann Romney Blind Trust had reported $1,783 in interest income from a bank account held at UBS in Switzerland in 2010. But interest from the Swiss bank account -- as well as holdings in other offshore investments in the Cayman Islands, Bermudas and Ireland that appear in the trust fund's tax returns -- were not disclosed in Romney’s financial disclosure form filed with the Office of Government Ethics last August.

The explosion ripped through Building A5 on a Friday evening last May, an eruption of fire and noise that twisted metal pipes as if they were discarded straws.

When workers in the cafeteria ran outside, they saw black smoke pouring from shattered windows. It came from the area where employees polished thousands of iPad cases a day.

Two people were killed immediately, and over a dozen others hurt. As the injured were rushed into ambulances, one in particular stood out. His features had been smeared by the blast, scrubbed by heat and violence until a mat of red and black had replaced his mouth and nose.

“Are you Lai Xiaodong’s father?” a caller asked when the phone rang at Mr. Lai’s childhood home. Six months earlier, the 22-year-old had moved to Chengdu, in southwest China, to become one of the millions of human cogs powering the largest, fastest and most sophisticated manufacturing system on earth. Go ahead admit it you can't take your eyes off of repulsive Newt Gingrich

January 24, 2012 and the wreck that is American democracy has arrived in warmer climes and believe me I'm not talking about Boston's fifty degree temperatures. The Republicans don't believe in global warming or even science for that instance, unless the US military already has it and which case they probably got it from Space Gnomes or something more easily explained than Science. The travelling show is moving south, almost as far south as you can go without bumping into Cuba and Mr. Castro, and I'm not just hinting at the Occupy Miami encampments around the city.

Who says this is four?

Admit it. The politician that you just can't take your eyes off of is Newt Gingrich. Mr. Gingrich accepts the fact that that he's pond scum but will then quickly to point out all his opponents' faults. He's the fat guy who tells people they really need to lose weight. Now that's chuzpagh. There is nothing too low for this repugnant Republican to grovel down to. His every breath is a hypocritical contradiction but who are you going to believe his word or a Google search engine. God has forgiven him which washed away everything repulsive he has ever said or will ever say. It has allowed him from limiting how much he wants to talk about his over sized his highly profitable historian fees and his over sized speaking fees. Really does Newt Gingrich have anything the public really wants to hear? When Newt has to take things to the lowest denominator his eyes twinkle, a surly grin comes over his professorial demeanor and he launches into a tirade about black kids needing to be forced to work as janitors and how they need to get rid of food stamps like starvation breeds character. It's forward thinking ideas like that and other forward thinking statements that rarely raise their head in the post-Appomattox world. Who else but Newt would say when asked about his extramarital affairs -"how dare you...how dare you...have you no shame. Then he can point out that this is why good people don't run for president, like he's a good person. He doesn't say they don't run because jack asses who cheat on their wives keep trying to impeach them while they're doing it.

Character, character, character

While now Newton Gingrich has just been given South Carolina after it was purchased for him for only five million dollars by a casino owner who appeared to have nothing else to do with his money other than buy a slightly used state. It's like these shadowy super pac titans do battle on a whole different plane slaying each other like an untruthful Poseidons and Zueses. Meanwhile the little South Carolinian troglodytes - "yeah blacks should be janitors, Newt put Fox analyst Juan William in his place, or the other egg heads continue to roll over on reflex and show our boy's their stomaches." These troglodytes who support Newt continue to think the only way to freedom is by doing exactly what he he wants. Sweet Jesus.

I think that's the voters beneath

One Mitton Romney is upset. He was told he could have South Carolina and somebody else bought it right out from under him, in a post-MLK clearance sale, and now Mittons is stuck sharing the stage with a human troll. And now Mrs. Las Vegas Casino Owner has decided she'd like to buy a state too, plopping down five million on Florida. It's the old adage, what do you get for people who have everything: South Carolina and Florida.

Why send and old fruit basket when you can buy the state

My only regret is that the late HL Mencken didn't live long enough to witness this train wreck on steroids. Meanwhile Gingrich has staked out a position to the right of Simon Legree and Chilean Dictator Pinochet. There is no way that Santorum and Paul can to stake a more extreme position unless they accuse their opponent of being soft on human sacrifice and claim that they fail to realize that life begins at the conception of a wet dream.

Tom don't you realize I'm building your character.

Deal to Keep Super PACs Out of Senate Race

Deal to Keep Super PACs Out of Senate Race

Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) and his likely Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren have reached a deal to keep super PACs out of their race, reports The Hill, marking "the first attempt by candidates to wrest control of their races back from groups over whom they have no direct control."

"The pact signed by Warren and Brown on Monday imposes a financial penalty whenever an outside group intrudes on the race. If an outside group places a television or Internet ad supporting a candidate, the candidate would be required to donate 50 percent of the cost of the ad to a charity of the opponent's choosing within three days. Negative attack ads would also trigger the penalty, with the candidate whose rival is attacked being forced to forfeit half the cost."

Meanwhile, Greg Sargent notes Karl Rove's Super PAC already appears to be signaling that it may not honor the deal.

Six Facts About Mitt Romney's Tax Returns | ThinkProgress

Six Facts About Mitt Romney's Tax Returns ThinkProgress

After weeks of refusals and equivocation, Mitt Romney finally released his tax returns last night to a handful of media outlets, showing that he made $21.7 million in 2010 and $20.9 million last year. He only actually released one year of returns, 2010, and his estimated return for 2011, even though many have called on him to follow the precedent set by his father and release many more years of returns.

In light of Mitt's tax returns his go back to Russia comment to occupier has a different meaning.

As Mitt said America is a great country and why wouldn't he when that occupy Wall Street protester is likely subsidizing Romney family. Romney paying 13% for sitting on his rear end and moving money and a Starbucks barista kicks in 33% to make sure Romney adult kids have roads to travel on, a firehouse to put out a fire in their houses, and a police department in case somebody breaks into your house before you can shuttle your money off shore. So I guess what Romney was saying is keep subsidizing my family or go back to Russia, because by complaining about you having to give me free stuff is dividing our country.

Crooks and Liars

Crooks and Liars

Last August, the Associated Press reported that the CIA had violated that prohibition when it “played a key role in transforming the New York Police Department’s intelligence unit into a cutting edge spy shop dedicated to gathering information on Muslims.”

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly insisted in October that the arrangement was legal under a 1981 presidential order, which allows the CIA to provide local law enforcement with “specialized equipment, technical knowledge or assistance of expert personnel,” provided the guidelines are spelled out in advance and the agency’s general counsel approves of the arrangement.

The AP is now reporting, however, that according to intelligence officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, neither of those things was done in 2002 when then-CIA director George Tenet sent a veteran officer to set up “spying programs that transformed the NYPD into one of the nation’s most aggressive domestic intelligence agencies.”

Scott Walker's Fundraising Pitch: 'Big Labor Bosses' Are Trying To 'Barge And Bully' Into Wisconsin

WASHINGTON -- "Big Union-sponsored mercenaries." "Bare-knuckle union attacks." "Strong-arm tactics."

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's (R) most recent fundraising letter to solicit donations for a potential recall election minces no words in going after his Democratic and union opponents. The four-page letter uses a variation of "Big Labor Bosses" 14 times. It also calls out other classic bogeymen for the right: the "Moveon.org Radicals," "Liberal Billionaire George Soros' attack organizations," "President Obama's Political Machine" and the "Ultra Left-Wing Elites from Hollywood and Manhattan.

" These menacing forces are all coming together to, according to the letter, carry out a "naked power grab" in Wisconsin.

"Mark my words," reads the letter, "if they barge and bully and get there [sic] way here, your state's next...so, together, we must fight them tooth and nail right here and right now."

Kucinich Announces ‘Game Changing’ Constitutional Amendment to Publicly Finance Federal Elections | Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich

H.J. Res.100 would require that all federal campaigns –all campaigns for President, Vice-President, Senator and Representative – be financed exclusively with public funds and prohibit any expenditures from any other source, including the candidate. H. J. Res. 100 would also prohibit any expenditures in support of, or in opposition to, any federal candidate, so that interest groups will not be able to influence elections. It will maintain the First Amendment “freedom of the press” and preserve the traditional role that the media have played in our electoral process.
“We must rescue American democracy from unlimited corporate money. This is the most fundamental issue facing the future of our nation. With corporate, private financing we have officials working for the interest of corporations. With public financing we have officials working for the public. And public financing will actually save taxpayers’ money, by eliminating any incentive of public officials to reward campaign contributors with taxpayer subsidies.
“We must eliminate the influence of money on our elections and on our policy-making. We must eliminate the influence of special interests on our elections and on our legislation. We must eliminate the influence of multi-national corporations and foreign corporations on the government of our country. We cannot wait. We must fight for government of the people, by the people, for the people,” said Kucinich.

New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina, and the day the American Psyche changed

Bruce Springsteen has a new album coming out and his new song hints at New Orleans and Katrina again. A clear change in tone appeared to happen in Springsteen following what he saw in New Orleans and it was certainly understandable. It was the first time that government appeared to not care what happened to its own citizens. Even the networks seemed surprised when their own anchors couldn't ignore the bodies floating by them. Of course much of the national guard wasn't available because for some reason they were in Iraq instead trying to rebuild that country instead of their own back yards. For a time Blackwater, or America's rent a soldier, had to come in and bring law and order. There was some question whether if they shot anybody in New Orleans whether that person could be found guilty under American law as the federal government was contracting out their responsibility.

"Them who's got got out of town
And them who ain't got left to drown"
--Springsteen How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Time and Live

Black or White: the common denominator was poor and the American government had very little compassion for its own citizens.

Spike's Lee documentary that showed the general indifference of our leaders when it came to Americans

Pretty hard for the helicopters to miss the message. The first on the scene was actually people from Cuba, Venezuela and Canada just disgraceful. Not only could the US government not do enough but it even prevented other from helping its own people.

Venezuala - An offer of aid from the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, which included two mobile hospital units, 120 rescue and first aid experts and 50 tonnes of food, has been rejected, according to the civil rights leader, Jesse Jackson.

Mr Jackson said the offer from the Venezuelan leader, whom he recently met, included 10 water purification plants, 18 power generation plants and 20 tonnes of bottled water.
The offer was made in a letter from the Venezuelan ambassador to the United States, Bernardo Alvarez, to the governor of Louisiana, Kathleen Blanco.

It was one of many from governments and aid organisations across the world, despite allegations by many conservative commentators and bloggers that the US is being ignored by countries it has helped during crises.

Mr Jackson said the rejection of the offer from one of Mr Bush's most outspoken political foes was a sign the federal government was incapable of handling the crisis properly. "This may be Mr Bush's worst hour of leadership," said Mr Jackson.

Cuba - On several instances, Cuba has offered to send free doctors and medical supplies to the United States, and the US has turned them down. Is this right? Cuban doctors are known around the world for the excellent medical care they provide in underserved and recent-disaster areas, absolutely free of charge. Why should we turn them down?

Full Story: http://sustainablemedicine.org/2009/03/cubans-offer-free-doctors-us-refuses/

From all over they came to the super dome unfortunately food and water didn't so they sat out in the sun and baked. And they waited for somebody to care enough to do something.

In Springsteen's new song "We Care For Our Own" the Super dome is again mentioned. It's almost as if Springsteen can't get these terrible images out of his mind.

President Bystander looks down

With that, he launched into a song titled "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?" and dedicated the song to "President Bystander." Its lyrics included the lines: "There's bodies floatin' on Canal and the levees gone to hell ... them who's got out of town, and them who ain't got left to drown, tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live?"

Real Story: http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/5/1/113726.shtml

He says, "Me and my old school pals had some might high times 'round here
And what happened to you poor black folks, well it just ain't fair"
He took a look around, gave a little pep talk, said, "I'm with you" then he took a little walk
-- Springsteen "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Time and Live."

The lines are almost actual quotes from Bush about New Orleans whose experiences seemed to have gone no further than getting drunk and yelling "Show me your tits."

For awhile boat was the leading mode of transportation

The American media did everything to ignore the story but even they couldn't miss the bodies floating past them and at least for a day or two so-called objective journalism went out the window. I guess next time they'll have to cover the flood from a different city so their hearts don't get in the way.

New Orleans again showed how much we take care of our own when they sold of the school system whole sale, got rid of people's housing,  and celebrated the fact they had made people homeless. Even homes that were in decent enough shape had to be torn down so the politicians friends could rebuild in and skim off the top. As Louisiana Congressman Richard Baker (R-LA) said, after the hurricane, "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did."

New Hampshire Considers Collective Bargaining Ban

The war over public employee collective bargaining has moved to New Hampshire, where the Tea Party-controlled legislature has taken up consideration of a bill banning collective bargaining in the state.

The state House Labor Committee is hearing testimony Thursday regarding a package of bills that local labor leaders consider the latest in a series of attacks on public employees. Among these are bills to prohibit collective bargaining among public employees, a bill to prohibit the collection of union dues from wages and a bill eliminating lunch breaks for workers. The bills follow a contentious debate over right-to-work legislation in the Granite State that resulted in the legislature narrowly sustaining Gov. John Lynch's (D) veto in early December.

"We had a drawn out right-to-work fight," said Mark Mackenzie, president of the New Hampshire AFL-CIO. "We have a group that is not in favor of organized labor. They see the second part of the session to focus on their ideological views of labor."

there ain't no-one hearing the bugle blown
we take care of our own
we take care of our own
wherever this flag's flown
we take care of our own

where's the eyes, the eyes with the will to see
where's the hearts, they run over with mercy
where's the love that has not forsaken me
where's the work that set my hands, my soul free
where's the spirit to reign, reign over me
where's the promise, from sea to shining sea
where's the promise, from sea to shining sea
wherever this flag is flown
wherever this flag is flown
wherever this flag is flown

we take care of our own
we take care of our own
wherever this flag's flown
we take care of our own
we take care of our own
we take care of our own
wherever this flag's flown
we take care of our own

Republican Woman Thanks Newt For Putting Juan Williams In His "Place"

Thank God Juan Williams has made himself the human punching bag for the Fox mob. I hope Fox's millions was worth William's surrendering his dignity.

A post card from Mitt's millions of offspring

Mitt's money

Dear Mitt,

I'm in the Cayman Islands enjoying the weather and the low tax rate. Wish you were here. One day maybe you can fly down here and we'll be together.

Love and Kisses,

Mitt's Millions

Colbert Hermann Cain rally

Colbert and Cain will appear together at a South Carolina rally

FOR IMMEDIATE catch & RELEASE
STEPHEN COLBERT ASKS SOUTH CAROLINA TO
"ROCK ME LIKE A HERMAN CAIN!"
Attention world, particularly the South Carolina part:
NEW YORK CAROLINA -- For a week now, Stephen Colbert has been calling on South Carolinians who share his values to vote for Herman Cain during this Saturday's historic GOP primary. Actually, he hasn't called on all South Carolinians yet; he's only up to "Brabham" in the Charleston phonebook.
Jr. Exploratory Committee Chairman Stephen T. Colbert said of Cain: "Herman is the only former candidate who truly shares my values. It's like our values were separated at birth. And our ethics are at least first cousins."
In support of their non-candidacies, this Friday, January 20th at 1:00 P.M. at the Cistern in front of historic Randolph Hall at the College of Charleston, Colbert and Cain will co-hold "THE ROCK ME LIKE A HERMAN CAIN: SOUTH CAIN-OLINA PRIMARY RALLY." The area will open to guests starting at noon.
Together, these two unique voices will declare that they are the same man. Indeed, if you close your eyes and don't listen, they are hard to tell apart.
"As with all my appearances on college campuses, I expect to receive an honorary degree," said the Peabody Award-winning Grammy winner. "This time, I'm hoping for a Masters of Bachelors."
Colbert said he wants "all undecided voters to vote for Cain," adding, "9-9-9."
Please direct all questions to Yahoo Answers. They always know everything.

As it turns out, Cain is in on the joke. Kathy Hoekstra, Cain's director of media relations, was quoted by Fox News as saying, "Colbert's people got in touch with us late last week and Mr. Cain will be taping a segment with Mr. Colbert on Friday in South Carolina." She continued, "The endorsement of course comes as a pleasant surprise."

A golden oldie. Probably even more true today than it was back then

Romney Parks Millions in Cayman Islands - ABC News#.Txc9UaVSRyK#.Txc9UaVSRyK

Although it is not apparent on his financial disclosure form, Mitt Romney has millions of dollars of his personal wealth in investment funds set up in the Cayman Islands, a notorious Caribbean tax haven.

A spokesperson for the Romney campaign says Romney follows all tax laws and he would pay the same in taxes regardless of where the funds are based.

As the race for the Republican nomination heats up, Mitt Romney is finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a shroud of secrecy around the details about his vast personal wealth, including, as ABC News has discovered, his investment in funds located offshore and his ability to pay a lower tax rate.

"His personal finances are a poster child of what's wrong with the American tax system," said Jack Blum, a Washington lawyer who is an authority on tax enforcement and offshore banking.

LP - Another title for this are taxes are for suckers.

The BRAD BLOG : 1 Million Recall Signatures vs. 1 Partisan Judge

The BRAD BLOG : 1 Million Recall Signatures vs. 1 Partisan Judge

Fed up with the hard-right's oligarchic, union busting agenda, on Tuesday, opponents of Wisconsin's Gov. Scott Walker (R) delivered a Recall petition to the state's Government Accountability Board (G.A.B.) containing more than one million signatures --- approximately 459,792 more than the 540,208 valid signatures required to trigger a statewide gubernatorial recall under WI law.

Those one million signatures are about to run into an attempted roadblock, however, courtesy of two questionable rulings by Republican Waukesha Circuit Judge J. Mac Davis in the Friends of Scott Walker vs. Brennan case.

The Judge's first questionable ruling was to deny the state Democratic Party's motion to intervene as defendants in the case. The second ruling, issued orally, also found in favor of the GOP, aspiring to force a significant delay in the process of validating signatures (and, therefore, the recall election itself) by shifting the statutory burden for challenging the validity of signatures from Walker to the G.A.B. That second ruling is in direct contradiction to decades of recall history in the Badger State and upends existing law --- a law that went unchallenged by Republicans previously, and worked rather well, even as recently as last year's recall elections of 6 GOP state Senators and 3 from the Democratic Party.

LP - I guess one one judge outweighs one million voters. Particularly when it comes to activist judges.

Where in New York is Scott Walker?

It's obvious that Scott Walker is not in Wisconsin when the recall tallies were coming in.

The Wisconsin voters appeared to want to know.

They put together clues they found along the way

He was busy meeting with Hank Greenberg of AIG, the gentleman at the right smiling at the thought of the little people blaming him.

This was the report from Wisconsin as some of the people there seem to want a full time governor:

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who seems to spend more time outside of Wisconsin, than in it, is once again in... New York City!  Afterall, there is nothing going on here in Wisconsin.
By my count, this is Walker's ninth trip just to the Big Apple since he became governor.   To put that in perspective, neighboring Iowa governor Terry Branstad, who came into office the same time as Walker, has only left the state once.  Total.
Walker is going to a fundraiser hosted by none other than Hank Greenberg-- the same Hank Greenberg that recently had the arrogant nerve to sue the U.S. government because the bail out of AIG, (which Greenberg is the majority shareholder), wasn't quite good enough!
Greenberg also was forced to testify before Congress and famously declared, "I don't feel any responsibility," even though Greenberg was one of the key players in the recent financial crises.
Greenberg is also good buddies with fellow NYCer David Koch, so I'm sure Koch will stop by will stop by and see his boy Walker while he's in town... again.
